Fantastic Four

The Fantastic Four is a fictional superhero team appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The group debuted in The Fantastic Four #1 (cover-dated Nov. 1961), which helped to usher in a new level of realism in the medium. The Fantastic Four was the first superhero team created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist and co-plotter Jack Kirby, who developed a collaborative approach to creating comics with this title that they would use from then on. As the first superhero team title produced by Marvel Comics, it formed a cornerstone of the company’s 1960s rise from a small division of a publishing company to a pop-culture conglomerate. The title would go on to showcase the talents of comics creators such as Roy ThomasJohn ByrneSteve EnglehartWalt SimonsonJohn BuscemaGeorge Pérez and Tom DeFalco, and is one of several Marvel titles originating in the Silver Age of Comic Books that is still in publication in the 2010s.

The four individuals traditionally associated with the Fantastic Four, who gained superpowers after exposure to cosmic rays during a scientific mission to outer space, are: Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), a scientific genius and the leader of the group, who can stretch his body into incredible lengths and shapes; the Invisible Woman (Susan «Sue» Storm), who eventually married Reed, who can render herself invisible and later project powerful force fields; the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), Sue’s younger brother, who can generate flames, surround himself with them and fly; and the monstrous Thing (Ben Grimm), their grumpy but benevolent friend, a former college football star and Reed’s college roommate as well as a good pilot, who possesses superhuman strength and endurance due to the nature of his stone-like flesh.

Ever since their original 1961 introduction, the Fantastic Four have been portrayed as a somewhat dysfunctional, yet loving, family. Breaking convention with other comic-book archetypes of the time, they would squabble and hold grudges both deep and petty, and eschewed anonymity or secret identities in favor of celebrity status. The team is also well known for its recurring encounters with characters such as the villainous monarch Doctor Doom, the planet-devouring Galactus, the sea-dwelling prince Namor, the spacefaring Silver Surfer, and the shape-changing alien Skrulls.

The Fantastic Four have been adapted into other media, including four animated television series, an aborted 1990s low-budget film, and the studio motion pictures Fantastic Four (2005) andFantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).Image

Artemisia Receiving Mausolus’ Ashes (also known as Sophonisba Receiving the Poisoned Cup) is a painting by the Dutch master Rembrandt. It is housed in the Museo del Prado of MadridSpain. It is signed «REMBRANDT F: 1634».

The subject of the picture is still unclear. It portrays a young woman, variously identified asSophonisba or Artemisia, or a generic queen due to her jewels and rich garments, receiving a cup from a maiden. The cup would contain the ashes of Artemisia’s husband, King Mausolus, or, in the case of Sophonisba, the poison which killed her.

For the woman, Rembrandt probably used his wife Saskia as model.

JOAN OF ARC starring Ingrid Bergman
This 1948 movie about Joan of Arc is my favorite out of all the Joan of Arc movies because it stays closest to the established history. I especially like the way they incorporated so many of Joan’s most famous quotes into the script. Is it perfect, no, but then the perfect movie about Saint Joan has yet to be made and this one at least tries to stay close to the true story of Joan of Arc.

The movie was made by several of Hollywood’s heavyweights of the era with Walter Wanger as the producer and Victor Fleming as the director. It was the intention of both men to create a large epic film similar to Fleming’s blockbuster success Gone with the Wind. Both men felt they had succeeded, however, circumstances surrounding the personal life of Ingrid Bergman seem to have sunk the film both commercially and in the Academy Awards. Walter Wanger refused an honorary Oscar for Joan of Arc because he felt the film should have at least been nominated for best picture. Go Here for more commentary about the commercial problems with 1948 Joan of Arc

Despite being in her thirties when the movie was made, Ingrid Bergman delivers a passionate and convincing performance as Saint Joan. Some have claimed that she was too beautiful to have played Joan, however, it was the ugliness of her personal life and therefore the lack of complete beauty that Saint Joan herself possessed that caused the movie to not receive the acclaim it deserved.

The movie itself covers the entire life of Joan of Arc from the time when she first heard the call of God to her last words as she died at the stake. The only real deviation from history occurs in the middle after the crowning of Charles VII. They apparently used some poetic license to try to shorten the story and combine some events to jump forward to Joan’s capture and trial. All in all, it is a very good movie that both those with, and without, prior knowledge of the life of Joan of Arc should enjoy viewing. Most people are pleasantly surprised since they have never seen this movie listed among Hollywood’s best classic films and are unaware of its quality. Image

The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (known in PAL regions as Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Classics HD and sometimes referred to as The Team Ico Collection) is a video game that contains high-definition remasters of two older PlayStation 2 games for the PlayStation 3. The two games, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, were developed by Sony Computer Entertainment’s Team Ico, and who have assisted in the remastering alongside Bluepoint Games to provide support for high-definition monitors, higher frame rates, stereoscopic 3D, and additional features for the PlayStation Network. The two games, while fundamentally different in gameplay and story, are thematically connected, with Shadow considered a spiritual sequel to Ico, and the collection precedes the release of Team Ico’s next game, The Last Guardian, which is also thematically tied to these games. Both games were critically acclaimed on their original release, while the remastered collection itself was positively praised by reviewers.

Ungrateful Bliss

«So what is wrong with your husband?»

I was surprised, «What do you mean?»

«You wouldn’t be doing this with me if there wasn’t something wrong with him.»

«There’s nothing wrong with him,» I said. «I’m the problem.»

«Does he know anything is going on?»

Jake picked up my hand and tickled the back of it. «How can he not know that something isn’t right?»

«I’m turning into a good liar these days.»

«Would you lie to me?» He looked in my eyes that were about 3 inches from his.

«I don’t like that.» He frowned and looked at the back of my hand he was still tickling.

«Well I didn’t lie just then did I?» He sat up and looked down at my face as I rested my head on his pillow. I smirked at him.

«You are a piece of work,» he said.

I sat up…
